Socratic Smackdown: how to engage learners in game-like discussion

This session will provide participants with ideas to incorporate Socratic method of discussion into humanities classroom. In a game-like environment, students work in teams and learn to discuss texts, draw evidence and use it to construct their arguments and refute others’ ideas. Through the process they develop their listening, questioning and effective communication skills. Teams assess each other and offer points for insightful contributions and subtract points for disrespectful behaviors, such as disruption or interruption. Students learn how to work as a team, dive deeper into a variety issues, listen to others, and contribute to class in a meaningful way.
